This candle is based on one of my larger scale sculptures, originally shown at König Gallery in Berlin 5 years ago. These candles are some of my favorite smaller Edition works. They are both solid and ephemeral. So much of my sculpture imagines what an object might look like after time has transformed it. With a candle, that transformation happens right in front of you. As it burns, the wax shifts, details disappear, and the work takes on a different shape. I think they look best when they’re half burned down. There’s a moment when the original sculpture is still recognizable, but the flame has begun to create something I couldn’t have planned. Burning it becomes part of making the work.
